The Institute of Internal Auditors New Zealand (IIA NZ) provides Internal Auditing practitioners, executive management, boards of directors and audit committees with standards, guidance and information on Internal Auditing best practices. The Institute has membership drawn from both private and public sectors. The Institute is affiliated with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA Global) in the USA and the numerous IIA Chapters around the world.
IIA NZ is an incorporated society with a governing board elected from the membership of the organisation.
As we close out an extraordinary year, the 2024 IIA NZ Conference and Awards reminded us of the incredible strength, innovation, and dedication within our Internal Audit community. A few weeks have passed since we gathered for this milestone event, and immediately after the conference, the IIA NZ Board convened for the IIA NZ Board Strategy Day to chart the course for an even brighter future.
Our annual flagship event provided a special opportunity to connect under the banner of Internal Auditing, celebrating our shared commitment to advancing the profession.
With the theme "In an Era of Fraud and Corruption, Internal Auditors Safeguard the Future," the 2024 Conference highlighted our role in tackling some of today's most pressing challenges. We were proud to host a diverse lineup of local and international speakers who focused on integrity, transparency, and accountability.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who played a role in making the conference a success - members, attendees, speakers, sponsors, and suppliers alike.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we're especially thankful to those who shared their kind words. Here are a few highlights:
- "It's been a phenomenal week with the very successful 2024 conference orchestrated by the IIA NZ team - you're all remarkable."
- "The range of speakers, session formats, and opportunities to connect with colleagues were fantastic."
- "Well done on a world-class conference. Yours was faultless. Sterling work."
These comments reflect the hard work and dedication that went into making the event a success for you...our wonderful IIA NZ members. We deeply value the support of our members and key stakeholders in showcasing Internal Auditing's critical role in safeguarding the future.
Looking for access to speaker presentations? You can find them on the IIA NZ MyIIA online portal. Please note that only presentations approved for distribution are available.

Advancing Public Sector Integrity: Key Insights for Internal Auditors
In light of the Public Service Commission's (PSC) recent recommendations for enhancing public sector integrity, several important governance themes have emerged. These recommendations, highlighted in the TINZ October 2024 newsletter, underscore the increasing emphasis on accountability, transparency, and ethical culture across public institutions-areas where internal auditors play a pivotal role.
The IIA NZ Board and Advocacy Committee have reviewed the PSC's recommendations and their alignment with internal audit's essential function in fostering good governance.
The insights we've gathered serve as a reminder of the critical role internal auditors play in supporting public sector organisations to build trust, enhance ethical leadership, and ensure transparency in their operations.
Together, let's continue to champion the principles of integrity and accountability in the public sector. To read the full submission, CLICK HERE.
Supporting Internal Audit in the ANZSCO Comprehensive Review
The Institute of Internal Auditors New Zealand (IIA NZ) is pleased to share its support for Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand's (CA ANZ) submission to the ANZSCO Comprehensive Review. This submission advocates for the inclusion of certified accountants, external auditors, and related accountancy-skilled migrant workers in the green list entry programme. IIA NZ strongly believes internal audit aligns with the "related accountancy" category, given its vital role in governance, risk management, and compliance.
The addition of Forensic Accountant and Fraud Investigator roles to the national occupation list is particularly welcome, as these professions align closely with internal audit's focus on organisational integrity and fraud prevention.
New Zealand's current shortage of skilled internal auditors highlights the need for strategic workforce development. IIA NZ continues to address this through education advocacy, student engagement, and targeted training to build a sustainable pipeline of professionals.
We remain committed to collaborating with stakeholders to strengthen governance and attract skilled professionals to the assurance sector.
The Small Practitioners Interest Group (SPIG) is a discussion and networking forum for members in small teams to share experiences, issues and challenges they face. The group meet four times a year. All are welcome.

In this discussion, we'll explore internal audit methodologies tailored to the unique needs of smaller organisations. The new Global Internal Audit Standards™, released on 9 January, 2024, will become effective on 9 January, 2025. Internal audit functions can begin adopting the Standards immediately.
These Standards guide the worldwide professional practice of internal auditing and serve as a foundation for evaluating and elevating the quality of internal audit functions. At their core are 15 guiding principles that enable effective internal auditing. The Standards were established through a due process followed by the International Internal Audit Standards Board and overseen by the IPPF Council.
Please Note: The workshops will feature a blend of repeated and sequential elements. The IIA has published a new tool to aid Chief Audit Executives and their internal audit functions in implementing and preparing to conform with the new Global Internal Audit Standards by the effective date of 9 January, 2025. The Conformance Readiness Assessment Tool identifies the significant changes between the requirements of the 2017 IPPF and those of the 2024 Standards. When used in conjunction with the results of past quality assessments, the tool enables a comparison between the internal audit function's current practices and the new requirements to evaluate and remedy gaps in conformance.
Available to IIA Members only.

Global IIA CIA Price Increase Scheduled for 1 July, 2024
IIA Global is planning a price increase for the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) application and exam registration fees.

The price increase will take effect globally on 1 July 2024. We are planning a biannual price increase thereafter.
We are committed to keeping you informed of our certification price increase and will provide additional information if there are any changes or expected delays. If you have any questions, please contact us at Affiliate.CertSupport@theiia.org.
