IIA NZ Learning Lab: 3 of 4 Workshops 2025

Are you ready to expand your knowledge and grow within the Internal Audit profession? Join us for the third of four IIA NZ Learning Lab Workshops in 2025, designed to provide members with engaging, practical, and insightful learning opportunities.

IIA NZ Learning Lab overview:

IIA NZ is excited to launch our bi-monthly Online Learning Lab Workshops, tailored to provide members with insightful learning opportunities that combine theory with real-world application.

These workshops offer a collaborative environment where participants can explore key topics, gain resources, and discuss practical case studies to enhance their professional expertise.

  • Date: 31 July 2025
  • Time: 12:00 - 2:00 pm
  • Topic: "Beyond the Baseline: Auditing Emissions Reduction Strategies for Real-World Impact"
  • Speaker: Rick Lomax, Head of Sustainability, Health NZ

Session Overview:

Following his impactful session at Education Day 2025, we're pleased to welcome Rick Lomax back for a deeper dive into one of the most urgent areas facing internal audit: emissions reduction strategy and assurance.

This Learning Lab focuses on auditing beyond reporting-how to assess the credibility, completeness, and effectiveness of emissions reduction plans within your organisation. Rick will draw from his work across publicly funded healthcare in both Aotearoa New Zealand and England, highlighting practical ways internal audit can engage meaningfully with decarbonisation strategies, from supply chain to executive-level risk positioning.

Through real-life examples, systems thinking exercises, and candid discussion, participants will walk away with practical tools and sharper insight into what robust ESG audit involvement looks like in practice.

What to Expect:

  • A foundational understanding of emissions reporting and reduction planning
  • Case study: How Health NZ is responding to ESG expectations at scale
  • Hands-on sustainability thinking exercises designed to challenge and broaden audit perspectives
  • Exploring what is materiality for you across financial, environmental, and reputational impacts
  • Insight into the auditor's evolving role in ESG assurance and accountability

Workshops Agenda:

  • Topic overview: Each session begins with an engaging overview of the focus topic, presented by an experienced speaker.
  • Speaker insights: Learn from leading professionals in the field, who bring a wealth of expertise to the discussion.
  • Curated resources: Attendees will receive resources (for example: links, podcasts or documentation) to reinforce learning and support ongoing professional development.
  • Interactive case study: Each workshop includes a practical case study discussion, allowing participants to apply concepts in a real-world context and exchange ideas with peers.
  • CPE credits: Members who attend the full session will receive Continuing Professional Education credits.
